Rules of Poker

You know the basic rules of poker already. You know a flush beats a straight and the difference between a bet, a raise and a fold. However there are some unwritten rules of poker you may be unaware of, especially if you are not accustomed to playing in a live casino.

One of the unspoken rules of poker is that you should try not to react to the cards that come out if you are not in a hand. If a flush card comes on the turn of a Texas Hold’em game and you groan, you are alerting players still in the hand that you would have made a flush, which in turn makes it less likely that their opponent has a flush, making it more difficult to bluff. Similarly, expressing frustration when the board pairs may indicate that you have a card of the same rank making it very unlikely that the players still in the hand have that same card.

In this same vein, another of the rules of poker that is not always discussed is the one player to a hand rule. No one should be talking to a player who is trying to make a decision except perhaps the player who put him to that decision. Players not in the hand should just observe, not give advice to a player contemplating a bet or call. A player should definitely not confer with another player in the hand who has yet to act.

Some rules of poker change depending on what casino you are in. Certain casinos do not let you play out of a chip rack. Most casinos do not allow you to have cash on the table while you play. You can never take money out of your pocket in the middle of the hand for use in that hand of play.

As you can see, there is a lot more to the rules of poker than just what beats what. Be aware of local rules regarding etiquette and the House rules of the casino to avoid any confusion during your game and follow poker instructions to ensure a positive poker experience for all.
